Photomaly endings guide: what is confirmed about the multiple outcomes, how shifts and photographs drive the story, and a clean route for a second run.
Routes that change how the studio story resolves — verified from full clear runs.
Photomaly endings are decided by one number: how many anomalies you photographed and reported for the man with the blurred face before the final scored day runs out. Nothing else in the studio — money, upgrades, how pretty your prints are — has been observed to move the ending. Verified July 25, 2026.
How do Photomaly endings work?
Photomaly is a job sim with a story spine, and the story keeps score. A full run is about 2 hours for one run spread over a handful of studio days, and there is no dialogue tree, no karma meter and no menu choice at the end. The only thing you are ever asked to deliver is evidence, so the only thing the finale can measure is evidence.
Stage of the run
What the contact wants
Does it affect the ending?
Opening days
Nothing — you are just running the shop
No, but the routine you build here funds everything else
The day you are handed a key and a film roll
Develop his roll and keep quiet about it
Not on its own; it unlocks the darkroom and the working relationship
The day shop cameras are installed
Spot, photograph and report abnormal things during the shift
Yes — this is where the counter starts
The day the quota is raised
More reports per shift, checked more often
Yes — the target grows with the story
The day he calls your last chance
Fill the quota, and you will be rewarded
Yes — this is the branch point
The final morning
Nothing; he comes to you
The result is already locked in
The counter is the whole mechanism
Once the cameras go up, the shop computer shows the day's reports against the day's target. Every accepted report is acknowledged in plain language, and every rejected one is refused just as plainly, so you always know where the counter stands without guessing. That transparency is deliberate: the game wants you to know you are being scored while you are still able to do something about it.
Because of that, the ending question is really a scheduling question — the next section is the short version of who wins and who does not.
Photomaly ending list
Two conclusions are confirmed from complete runs. Photomaly does not put ending names on screen, so the labels below describe what triggers each one rather than inventing official titles for them.
Ending
Unlock condition
What happens
Status
Recruitment close
Fill the anomaly quota on the final scored day
The contact thanks you for not betraying his trust, says you will be working together a lot more, and pays out the reward he promised — a trip somewhere you are told not to let what you see frighten you, where the question about your father is finally answered in person
Confirmed
Failed-quota close
End the final scored day below the target
The same contact calls you a disappointment, explains what happened to your father and why, tells you not to make the same mistakes next time, and the run resets to day one
Confirmed
Trial run (demo)
Play the free demo instead of the full release
The demo stops before the camera work and the quota exist, so it has no ending of its own — see the demo guide
No ending
Further variations
TBA
The store page advertises multiple endings; only the two above have been observed end to end, and no additional outcome is listed here until it is
Documenting
Which conditions actually change the ending?
This is the table most players actually come for: a condition on the left, the outcome it points to on the right. Anything not confirmed is marked, rather than padded out with a guess.
Condition during the run
Likely outcome
Confidence
Quota met every scored day, including the last one
Recruitment close
Confirmed
Quota met all week but missed on the last chance day
Failed-quota close — the final day is the one he grades
Confirmed
No reports filed at all across the run
Failed-quota close
Confirmed
A day missed earlier, then the last chance day cleared
Expected to land on the recruitment close, since the final day is the stated test
TBA
Extra reports sent above the day’s target
Nothing — surplus evidence is refused, not banked
Confirmed
Photographs of ordinary things sent as evidence
Refused as pointless; the counter does not move
Confirmed
Orders rejected, customers lost, shop kept poor
No observed effect on the finale
TBA
Decorations, frames and studio upgrades bought or skipped
No observed effect — buy them for the shift loop instead, see upgrades
TBA
Telling a customer what appeared in their photo
Costs you that sale; no observed effect on the ending
TBA
The scripted set pieces are not choices
A run also contains fixed beats that look like decision points and are not. Resetting the fuse box in the back alley on the opening morning is a chore, not a branch — the same chore opens the free demo. The nightmare sequences between days play out whether you handle them well or badly, and one of them explicitly tells you not to use the camera. The back-rooms detour with its scattered ladder pieces has exactly one exit, and photographing the pursuer only buys distance.
Treat all of those as story rather than strategy. The one thing you can change is the counter, so the next two sections cover what each result looks like when the last day is over.
How do I get the recruitment ending?
Fill the quota on every scored day and, above all, on the day your contact tells you it is your last chance. That is the entire requirement. A documented clear needed four reports on the final day, and the target on earlier days is smaller — the number is shown on your computer, so play to the counter rather than to a number you read somewhere.
Do01Sweep the camera feeds after every customer arrives and again when one walks into the photo room
Do02Photograph anything abnormal the moment you see it, even mid-order — an unused shot costs nothing
Do03Transfer and report the same day; nothing carries over to tomorrow
Do04Re-walk the bathroom, the back room, the alley and your own bedroom if the counter is one short before closing
Do05Do not pad the counter with ordinary photos — a refused report wastes the trip
Do06Keep the paid orders moving so the shop still funds Paper, Ink and Envelopes
What the reward actually is
Come the final morning there is no shift to work. The contact walks in, tells you he is glad you did not betray his trust, says the two of you will be working together a lot more, and warns you not to let what you see frighten you because they did what had to be done for this world. Then he takes you somewhere the studio never hinted at, and the man whose studio you inherited is there, alive and restrained. You are welcomed onto the team by name, and the credits roll over the photographs you took during the run.
It is the closest thing Photomaly has to a good ending, though "good" is doing some work in that sentence — you finish the run employed by the people who put your father where he is.
The blurred photo is your progress bar
The picture of your father behind the counter starts heavily blurred and gets sharper as the run advances and your character recovers what was taken from him. It is a mood piece rather than a mechanic, but it is a useful sanity check that the story is still moving with you.
Miss the target instead and the same man arrives with a very different script.
What happens if you miss the quota?
You still reach a finale — the run does not fail out mid-week. On the final morning the contact turns up, tells you he expected better and that you are a disappointment to everyone, and then explains the part of the story the good ending shows you instead of saying out loud.
"Next time" is the point
The loop back to the first morning is the ending, not a game over screen. Read against what the recruitment close shows you, the implication is that failure is not fatal so much as it is repeatable: the memory goes, the studio reopens, and the same test starts again. Whether the character you play has already been through that cycle is exactly the kind of thing the nightmare sequences and the vent crawl keep pointing at.
You do not need to replay the week to see it
Because the final day is the graded one, seeing the other conclusion is cheap. Play a run with the loop you already know, ignore the camera feeds on the last day, close the shop under target and let the morning arrive. A full playthrough is about 2 hours for one run, so both finales fit comfortably into an evening.
If you would rather do it deliberately, the next section is the short route.
Planning a second run
A replay is faster than the first because the shop layout, the order rules and the darkroom sequence are already muscle memory. What changes is where your attention goes.
Getting ahead of the escalation instead of reacting to it
The target grows; your sweep rate has to grow with it
Achievements and endings are separate lists
Several of the 10 Steam achievements track loop milestones — your first completed order, your first developed roll — rather than which finale you reached. Plan the two independently: work the counter for the ending you want, and clear the rest of the list while the shop is open. The split is broken down on the achievements page.
Photomaly endings FAQ
How many endings does Photomaly have?
The store page advertises multiple endings. Two are confirmed from complete runs: a recruitment close for filling the anomaly quota on the final scored day, and a failed-quota close for finishing under target. Anything beyond those stays unlisted until it is verified.
Is there a true ending?
The game never labels one as such. The closest equivalent is the recruitment close, because it is the only outcome that answers the question about your father on screen rather than in a speech.
What decides which Photomaly ending I get?
Whether you fill the daily anomaly quota on the day your contact calls your last chance. Reporting rules are on the anomalies page.
Can I still get the good ending if I missed a quota earlier in the week?
Unconfirmed. The final day is the one he explicitly grades, so clearing it is the priority, but a mid-week miss has not been tested to a clean conclusion and is marked TBA rather than promised.
Do failed orders or low money change the ending?
No effect has been observed. Money funds Paper, Ink and Envelopes so you can keep hunting anomalies; it is not scored by the finale.
Does the demo have an ending?
No. The free demo covers the opening days, before the shop cameras and the quota exist. See the demo guide.
How long is a second run?
About 2 hours for one run, and a replay is quicker because you already know the pipeline. Both confirmed finales fit in one sitting.
